So I recently finished playing another fun indie title on Xbox Game Pass, Road 96, an adventure video game played from the first-person perspective. The game takes place in 1996, within the fictional nation of Petria, an authoritarian country ruled by a harsh dictatorship. You control the actions of several teenagers as they attempt to flee the country through Petria's northern border via Road 96. No one's road is the same as each teenager's path is procedurally generated, and there are thousands of roads across the authoritarian nation of Petria.
I had a lot of fun playing this one. It wasn't the most polished game, but it had character. I often browse through the trailers on Game Pass, looking for stuff that sparks an interest, and Road 96 did not disappoint. It was full of surprises. The game was full of well-written NPCs, and I grew to like all of them(except one) by the end of the game. You meet with each NPC several times throughout the game with different teenagers. There is a possibility to see each NPC's story in its entirety, and I managed to finish a couple of their stories.
Seeing the NPC's stories gives the game replay value, and it is short, so I could see myself replaying it. One of my favorite parts was a trippy limo ride with a right-wing reporter. It was very unexpected and hilarious. There was a silly game show-style quiz with a couple of goons that I enjoyed and barely won. I had fun trying to find all the collectibles, and even though I didn't get everything, it was too difficult. I managed to cross the border three times, died a few, and even got arrested once.
All and all, I was satisfied with the ending I got. If you like story and choice games, I recommend checking out Road 96. It is available on PC and all major consoles.
This game was a good surprise. I had fun playing it for sure. Another little indie gem that I would have never played if not for GamePass.
